Technical SEO Checklist for 2026: Core Web Vitals, Schema & Speed

Technical SEO is the foundation content sits on. Even excellent writing underperforms if the site underneath it is slow, poorly structured, or hard for search engines to crawl. Here is the checklist we run through on every project.

Core Web Vitals

• Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): main content should render quickly, ideally under 2.5 seconds.
• Interaction to Next Paint (INP): the page should respond to input without noticeable delay.
• Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): elements should not jump around as the page loads.

Crawlability

Confirm your robots.txt is not accidentally blocking important pages, submit an up-to-date XML sitemap, and check for orphaned pages with no internal links pointing to them.

Structured Data

Add schema markup for Organization, BreadcrumbList, and Article or Product types where relevant, and validate it before publishing to avoid malformed markup being ignored.

HTTPS and Security

A valid SSL certificate across the entire site is table stakes; mixed content warnings or expired certificates actively damage trust and rankings.

Duplicate Content and Canonicals

Set canonical tags correctly so search engines know which version of a page to index when similar content exists at multiple URLs.

Mobile Usability

Test tap targets, font sizes, and layout on real mobile devices, not just a resized browser window.
