The problem
Selling schach online is not a normal add-to-cart journey. A customer starts with a roof and beam direction, while the retailer sells rolls in fixed sizes and must deliver bulky combinations across different zones. The website has to translate the customer's real space into a complete, purchasable and deliverable order.
A valid coverage plan is still not necessarily a useful recommendation. The business must balance delivered cost, material waste and the number of sizes a customer has to order and handle, because shipping can reverse an apparent product saving.
The solution
The Shopify tools connect buying guidance and fulfilment. The calculator searches roll sizes and orientations, builds complete coverage plans and compares the strongest option at each level of order complexity; explicit business rules can prefer a simpler order within limits on price premium and overlap.
Customers see the recommendation, alternatives, cost differences and a scaled roof layout. When delivery is selected, shipping enters the comparison, and the custom shipping engine carries product and destination rules into checkout. The calculator shown here is a development preview.
The decisions behind it
- Cost versus simplicity
- A shorter order can win over the absolute cheapest combination, but only within a defined price premium. Extra sizes must justify their complexity with a meaningful saving.
- Coverage versus waste
- The search respects roof dimensions and beam direction, then measures overlap and overhang. Buying enough total area alone does not establish that the roof is covered.
- Product price versus delivered price
- Bulky-item delivery charges can outweigh a saving on the mats. The recommendation accounts for delivery before presenting a shipping-based comparison.
