The problem
A roof measurement does not tell a customer which schach to buy. Rolls come in different widths, lengths and prices, and the beam direction constrains how they can be laid. The cheapest combination can create excessive overlap or an awkward mix of sizes; a simpler order can cost more. Shipping can reverse the apparent saving again.
The challenge was to balance three competing goals: delivered cost, material waste and the number of different sizes a customer has to order and handle. Those priorities needed explicit rules, so the recommendation would be practical as well as mathematically valid.
The solution
The calculator searches combinations of roll sizes and orientations, builds complete coverage plans and compares the best option at each level of order complexity. Reusing intermediate calculations keeps that search responsive. It then applies a business-defined preference for simpler orders, subject to limits on price premium and overlap.
Delivery is included in the comparison when shipping is selected. Customers see the recommended plan, alternative combinations, cost differences and a scaled layout showing how the rolls cover the roof. The custom Shopify shipping engine connects those product decisions to checkout. The calculator shown here is a development preview.
The decisions behind it
- Cost versus simplicity
- A shorter order can win over the absolute cheapest combination, but only within a defined price premium. Extra sizes must justify their complexity with a meaningful saving.
- Coverage versus waste
- The search respects roof dimensions and beam direction, then measures overlap and overhang. Buying enough total area alone does not establish that the roof is covered.
- Product price versus delivered price
- Bulky-item delivery charges can outweigh a saving on the mats. The recommendation accounts for delivery before presenting a shipping-based comparison.
